Cultural Differences in Concerning TIME -16 October 2021 TESOL 103 - Week 5

            Monochronic X Polychonic

              Cultural Paradigms

Brother Ivers teaches us about TIME. How the perception of time is different for different cultures.

Monochronic (United States, Northern Europe, and others) "is oriented to tasks, schedules, and procedures. Policy is extremely important". (Edward T. Hall)

                                             TIME

"American businesses have a reputation for being cut off from employee morale and not worried about employees... Everything in our culture works for and rewards a monochronic view of the world." (Edward T. Hall)

                      TIME

Polychronic (Latin America, Mediterranean and most parts of the world):

Humans relationships are more important than schedules, more important than TIME. They are sensitive towards people's feelings. Rules can bent more easily in Polychronic countries.

                                                  TIME

As I have lived in the United States and living in Brazil, South America, I can relate to what was explained about these differences. Here, and I believe that everywhere, but especially here it is very important to have connections, to have friends, or you won't get things done. For example, it is good to have a good resume, but without a reference from a friend, it will be very hard to get a job. But things are changing a lot lately. With all the big companies arriving all the time. People are becoming less important than the job, this is sad.
