TESOL 103 - Week 07 - October 28, 2021 Culture and Psychology

 Culture and Psychology

I enjoy learning about psychology, and now to learn about culture and psychology has been wonderful for me.

Brother Ivers taught some very deep things in this lesson, it is hard to choose what to write and comment here. However I will share some points to help us understand this subject.

"Culture is a way of shaming people in situations where they would not be shamed in other cultures."

That is interesting, what can be shameful for a person in my country may not be in the United States, for example, and the opposite is also true.

He goes on: "In all cultures, they have their things that make a real man, a real woman, and it's common to have shame if you don't live up to those things."

"Culture can have a big affect on your psychology." And he gives us some examples:

*"Self-esteem: every culture has the culturally created ought self. The real self may or may not correspond to this culturally-demanded ought self."

Sometimes we see ourselves with the eyes of the group we are inserted on, and it is not our true selves. I remembered that we should always pray to look and see ourselves and others by the way Our Heavenly Father sees us. Doing this will help us to be ourselves and not be shamed of it, also will help us to grow to our full potential.

*"Life is too short and too precious to be miserable due to irrational culturally-created, artificial ought selves."

Once again, we are here to find joy, real joy.

It is very important for us as teachers to understand these stereotypes or cultural assumptions in our students, it is our responsibility to help them understand that they have value, they can learn, they are loved, if we can transmit these important messages to their mind and heart, everything else will get in the right place.
